If you run your own courier service business you will no doubt be keen to keep your business expenditure as low as possible – especially in the current economic climate here in the UK. One of your biggest expenses is probably going to be the cost of fuel so we thought you might like to consider these tips on how you may be able to reduce how much you are spending on putting diesel or petrol in your fuel tank.
Shopping Around
When you are filling your courier van up with fuel shop around to see which petrol station either in your locality or on the route you take to drop off parcels is offering the lowest priced petrol or diesel. There are a number of price comparison websites you can view to check our prices. Do try to avoid filling up at motorway service stations as they tend to be more expensive than say a local supermarket.
Tyre Pressure
If your tyre pressure is too low then it is quite possible that you will use more fuel than if the tyre pressure is correct. So, make sure that you check your trye pressure on a regular basis. Obviously, if the tyre pressure is incorrect then you will also probably be wearing your tyre tread down more than would be expected so this would mean you needing to replace your tyres more frequently which would cost you even more money.
How You Drive
Whilst you will be keen to complete your parcel deliveries as quickly as possible avoid excessive acceleration as this will likely result in your courier van consuming fuel more quickly. Accelerate steadily and be careful how fast you drive. For instance, if you are on the motorway and are allowed to travel at 70mph why not travel at say 55mph as you should find that you would use less petrol or diesel.
Air Conditioning
You may or nor may not be aware that if you turn off the air conditioning in your van you should find that your fuel consumption should drop. To partially compensate for turning off the air conditioning you could consider partially opening the windows in the van.
Planning Your Drop Offs
You probably do this already but do try to plan your drop offs so that you are ideally not having to go back to the same area in the afternoon that you visited in the morning thus reducing your fuel consumption.
We do hope that the above tips prove of financial benefit to you.
