It is no secret that the UK economy is not in a good place at the moment with high inflation resulting in increased interest rates, higher utility bills and food prices. As a result, this appears to have been one of the reasons why people have been cutting back on online purchases in 2022 if the information provided in a report by Pitney Bowes is anything to go by.

The Pitney Bowes Parcel Shipping Index covering 2022 reveals that last year 5.1 billion parcels were delivered in the UK. However, it is disappointing to read that equates to a drop of 5% when compared with the previous year. In 2022, 162 parcels were delivered every second, 14 million parcels were delivered every day, 181 parcels were delivered to each household and 75 parcels were delivered to each person in the UK.

Royal Mail delivered more parcels than anyone else in the UK in 2022 with a figure of 1.3 billion. However, that is 19% less than in 2021. Its volume market share dropped by 5% to 25% in that year. It generated revenue of $5.1 billion with this being 26% lower than in 2021. In second place was Amazon Logistics that delivered 0.9 billion parcels so it maintained its market share by volume of 6%. It generated revenue of $3.3 billion with this being a rise of 7% compared to 2021. In third place was Hermes with 0.7 billion deliveries with its market share by volume rising by 1%. It generated revenue of $2.8 billion with this being 5% lower than in 2021.

If you look at worldwide figures the number of parcels delivered in 2022 amounted to 161 billion compared to 159 billion in 2021. That is a rise of 1%. That equates to 5,102 parcels being delivered every second, 441 million parcels being delivered each day and an average of 42 parcels being delivered to each person in the world.

Apparently, 87% of parcel global volume is generated by the USA, China and Japan.
