Courier drivers may find it of interest to read that, according to the Motor Insurers” Bureau (MIB), it is more likely that a young driver in the age range of 18 to 24 is accidentally uninsured. Whilst there may be a number of drivers who genuinely do not realize that he or she needs suitable car insurance, the law does not distinguish between those who accidentally make a mistake by not having car insurance with those who knowingly avoid taking out car insurance.
It is quite possible that someone operating a courier service for which they may use a van to make deliveries also possesses a car for everyday use for the family.
It is a legal requirement that if you own a car then you must make sure that there is adequate car insurance in place unless the vehicle has been declared SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) and the vehicle is kept off the public road system i.e. kept on your drive. When we say “adequate car insurance” we mean that at very least you have third party cover in place.
Research carried out by the MIB found that 25% of those in the above age range were not aware that it was a legal requirement to have motor insurance in place unless the vehicle was declared SORN.
It is concerning to note that it is estimated that uninsured drivers cost the economy here in the UK in the region of £1 billion every single year. We are sure that you will agree that is a staggering figure.
Research was carried out by the MIB of in excess of 2,000 grown ups in the UK that discovered there was a huge gap in the knowledge of those taking part in the survey in the age range of 18 to 24.
You may be aware that a number of motor insurance policies renew automatically every year but a staggering 52% in the above age range did not realize that not all motor insurance policies renew automatically every year. This is an example of where a driver could genuinely make such a mistake and be without car insurance. This may only come to light when making a claim to discover that he or her has no cover or when he or she is pulled over by the police and informed they have no insurance on their motor vehicle.
Can you imagine the potential repercussions of discovering that you have no courier insurance in place?
So, check your motor insurance policy carefully to make sure if it will automatically renew in a year’s time or not. However, in any event, do make sure that you get a competitive, no-obligation courier insurance quotation to compare with your renewal premium.
