If you are a courier driver then it is quite likely that the vehicle you will be driving around in to conduct your business will be a light commercial vehicle (LCV) – commonly known to most people here in the UK as a Van. If you are in the fortunate position of being able to afford to buy a new van then you will be pleased to read that the number of new vans sold in the UK in May 2023 rose when compared with the same month last year. We say pleased because that may mean that there is an increased selection of vans to choose from the many manufacturers of such vehicles.

According to figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of new vans in the up to 3.5 tonnes category sold here in the UK in May 2023 amounted to 25,359. Compare that with the 22,000 new vans registered in May 2022 then that is a significant rise of 15.3%. That news will have been welcomed by many people within the motor trade industry.

Another pleasing set of figures is for the number of new vans sold on a year to date basis to May 2023. In this period there were 135,296 new vans registered in the up to 3.5 tonnes category compared to 117,941 for the same period last year. That is a pleasing rise of 14.7%.

Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) sales of new vans make for good reading. In May 2023 there were 1,041 sold compared to 869 in May 2022 – that equates to a rise of 19.8%. On a year to date basis to May 2023, the number of new BEVs sold totaled 7,028 whereas for the same period last year the figure was 6,085 – that is an increase of 15.5%.
