If you are a courier driver using the likes of a van to deliver parcels and other items then it is quite possible that you also own a car. If that is the case then you might find it of interest to read that the average cost of insuring a car fell in the 3rd quarter of this year albeit only by a few pounds. Nevertheless, any saving on your household expenditure has got to be welcomed in the present financial climate here in the UK.
Every quarter, the price comparison website known as Confused.com publishes its Car Insurance Price Index with the last one being issued on the 23rd September 2026. It is possible to read the whole report on their website but we thought you might appreciate it if we highlighted just a few of the things contained in the index.
For example, the average cost of fully comprehensive car insurance reduced to £713 per annum in the 3rd quarter of 2026 compared to a figure of £719 per annum in the 2nd quarter of 2026 – a modest drop of £6.00pm. In the 3rd quarter of last year premiums average £734 per annum.
When a car insurer quotes a price for your cover it takes into account numerous things such as where you live, how old you are, the make and model of car, how many miles you travel in the vehicle each year, who else do you want to be able to drive the car, your claims history and whether you want to include any optional extras such as car key cover.
You can probably guess that it is the young, inexperienced driver who is most likely to be involved in a road traffic accident rather than a 65 year old with 40 plus years driving experience. Therefore, young drivers, on average, cost more to insure than a mature motorist. For instance, an 18 year old pays an average of £2,083 per annum to insure his or her car. Those aged between 17 to 20 years of age pay an average of £1,860 per annum compared to those aged 60 to 69 years of age paying an average of £457 per annum. Those aged 40 to 49 pay an average of £689 per annum. As you can see, there is a huge variance.
Where you happen to live also has a significant impact upon the price you will pay to insure your car. If you reside in Inner London expect to pay, on average, the most to insure your car with premiums averaging £1,079 per annum. Could this be due in part to you being more likely to be involved in a road traffic accident or having your car stolen? In England the cheapest region to insure a car is South West England with premiums averaging £550 per annum.
