If you own a van for your courier service you will have suitable courier insurance in place. After all, it is a legal requirement to insure a motor vehicle unless it has been declared SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) and is kept off the public road system. Lt us hope that you do not have to make a claim on your cover but if you do you hope that there will not be a problem in your insurance company paying out. So, you may find it of interest to read that in the second quarter of 2026 motor insurance companies paid out a record amount to meet motor insurance claims.
According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), in Q2 of 2026, motor insurance companies paid out £3.2 billion. That is a huge sum of money but that is partly what your courier insurance premiums are used for. That amount is a 5% increase on what was paid out in Q1 of 2026 and is 7% more than what was paid out in the same quarter of 2025.
Why are motor insurance companies paying out more to meet claims? Well, there are no doubt a number of reasons but one of them is going to be the fact that modern cars tend to have more sophisticated equipment on board such as complex sat nav systems, braking systems, lighting configurations, safety measures such as airbags and even systems that warn you if you are going over the white lines down the centre of the road hopefully helping you avoid driving into a vehicle on the other side of the road.
If you are driving a courier van around for a good part of the day then you will no doubt welcome such technology as it should help you on a very busy day delivering parcels. After all, we are sure that those of you that have the likes of reversing cameras and sensors fitted to your courier van find them useful when reversing such a large vehicle.
Another interesting figure provided by the ABI was that an average of £4,900 was paid out per motor insurance claim in the second quarter of 2026. That is an increase of 4% in comparison to the first quarter of 2026.
The average cost of repairing a windscreen in the second quarter of 2026 rose by 7% to £283.
