If you run your own courier service delivering parcels and a range of other items to personal and/or business customers then one of your major business expenditures could well be the amount you spend on fuel. At the time of writing this post, the USA vs Iran war is still taking place several months after it first started. Partly due to this war, the cost of petrol and diesel at fuel pumps in the UK and around the world has risen significantly.

We are sure that you will agree any way that you can contain or reduce the amount you are spending on putting fuel in the fuel tanks of your delivery vehicles has got to be considered.

One thing that immediately comes to mind is the possibility of investing in a battery-powered vehicle. There are quite a number of vehicles being powered in this way and it may be something worth considering. You will no doubt need to take into account the potential increased cost of buying a battery powered vehicle compared to a conventionally fuelled vehicle so you may wish to do some number crunching to assess the viability of such an investment.

The following suggestions are not exhaustive but you may wish to make sure that your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure as an incorrectly inflated tyre could not only prove to be a potential danger to other road users and pedestrians but it could also result in you using more fuel than you really needed to.

Whilst there is a cost involved, you should make sure that your courier van or whatever type of vehicle you drive is serviced on a regular basis and that the oil is at the correct level.

Be careful how you drive. For instance, do not accelerate too quickly when pulling away from say a set of traffic lights. Ideally, don’t dive at too high a speed. For instance, if you are on the motorway, don’t drive at 70mph. Driving at say 55mph is likely to be more fuel-efficient.

Whilst we appreciate that we are getting much higher temperatures in the UK partially due to climate change be aware that if you have your air conditioning on you are likely to use more fuel than if it was not on. Perhaps consider partially opening one or more of the vehicles in your courier van.
