In the current financial climate here in the United Kingdom nobody really wants to see the average cost of car insurance going up. Unfortunately, that is exactly what has happened in the 3 months to May 2026 according to the Confused.com Car Insurance Price Index that is produced every quarter.

The index provides the average cost of taking out comprehensive car insurance and whilst our website relates to courier insurance there will be many couriers who also possess a car that he or she uses on a daily basis for such things as dropping the kids off at school or popping to the supermarket to do a weekly shop.

In the 2nd quarter of 2026 the average cost of such cover amounted to £719 per annum with this being an average rise of £8 per annum in comparison to the previous 3 months. However, it is worth noting that the figure of 3719 peer annum is an average of £38 per annum less than 12 months ago. In fact it is the first fall in car insurance premiums since back in the last quarter of 2023 when premiums averaged £995 per annum.

Numerous factors affect how much you are charged to insure your car such as where you live, what sort of car you drive, your age and how many miles you drive in your family salon or hatchback each year.

For example, if you reside in the South West of the UK then car insurance premiums average £504 per annum. If you live in the South of England expect to be charged an average of £580 per annum. If you reside in Leeds/Sheffield then premiums average £798 per annum. Unfortunately, if you happen to reside in Inner London then the average cost of fully comprehensive car insurance is 31,088 per annum. Just look at the difference with the South West of the UK.

The age of a driver plays a large part in the amount car insurers charge to provide cover. As an example, if you are aged between 40 to 49 the average premium is £699 per annum. Those between the ages of 20 to 29 pay an average of £1,255 per annum. Regrettably, if you are aged between 17 to 20 expect to be charged an average of £1,813 per annum. After all, it is the young, inexperienced motorist who, on average, is more likely to be involved in a road traffic accident.
