If you are a self employed courier driver you are probably using a van to make deliveries. It is of vital importance that the vehicle is well maintained to ensure that you do not have any problems whilst out on deliveries as if you did this could impact your income in a negative way. So, below are some tips to help make sure that the unforeseen does not happen mechanically to your van.
Regular Servicing – make sure that you follow the service schedule as this should reduce the possibility of having any mechanical issues. It should also assist in you maximizing the number of miles per gallon you achieve thus hopefully containing your fuel costs which is normally a major expense for a courier driver.
Oil Level – check your oil level on a weekly basis as you may be surprised just how much oil a vehicle can potentially use over a relatively short period of time.
Anti- Freeze – check the water coolant/antifreeze level periodically.
Windscreen Wash Reservoir – make sure that this is topped up and contains a suitable screen wash.
Brake Pads – although these should be checked as part of a service periodically have them checked as you do not want to have them wear down to a point where the discs are being damaged.
Light Bulbs – on a weekly basis make sure that all the light bulbs both inside and outside the van are working.
Tyres – on a regular basis have them checked to make sure the tread is above the legal limit and they are not damaged in any way.
Breakdown Cover – it would be sensible to make sure that you have breakdown cover in place in case you do have a mechanical problem.
It is also worth mentioning that you should ensure your courier van is kept clean both inside and outside at all times. After all, first impressions count and your customers would prefer that their parcels are being picked up and dropped off in a clean vehicle.
