As a courier driver it is quite possible that you also own a family car. If that is the case, you may find it of interest to read that in the first quarter of 2025 motor insurance companies paid out a record amount to meet claims from motorists according to data published by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) since the aforementioned started to keep records back in 2013.
In the first quarter of this year the amount paid out amounted to £3.2 billion. Of that figure, £2.1 billion related to the amount paid out to meet repair costs. There were a number of things that resulted in car insurance repairs increasing such as higher salary costs, more expensive car parts and skilled technicians being in short supply. It is also worthy noting that newer cars have more expensive parts to replace than older vehicles such as wing mirrors.
Another interesting and concerning statistic is that the average amount paid out relating to the theft of cars or the theft of items from inside a car averaged £11,300.
So, what can be done to potentially lower the amount paid out by car insurance companies to meet claims? Well, motorists could make sure that he or she does not leave items visible inside the car and instead place those items out of sight in the boot of the car. Drivers could drive with care and consideration for other motorists on roads making sure that they keep within the speed limits at all times.
When parking your car late at night if you are going out for the evening, make sure that it is parked in a well-lit place and preferably in an area that is well populated with people walking by. In doing so, it is less likely that it will be stolen or broken into. When parking your car at home, if at all possible, put it in your garage or on your drive. Taking such actions may reduce the possibility of your car being stolen and, who knows, may help contain or even reduce car insurance premiums if car insurance companies end up paying out less to meet claims.
