If you are a courier you may find it of interest to read that PostNord that is the state run postal service in Denmark is to stop delivering letters at the end of 2025. Instead it will focus on delivering parcels.
Apparently, it has seen a huge drop in the number of letters being sent over the years. In fact, since 2000, the number of letters being sent in Denmark has dropped by in excess of 90%. In 2000 around 1.4 billion letters were delivered in Denmark compared to only 110 million in 2024. We are sure that you will agree this is a huge fall in letter deliveries in that country. One of the reasons for the drop in the number of letters is the introduction of digital mail services.
As a result, around 2,200 employees could loose their jobs – a huge potential reduction in staff numbers. As a result of concentrating on its parcel business that is said to be profitable, it is expected to create in the region of 700 new jobs.
Apparently, there have been falls in the number of letters being delivered on a global basis so it is not just Denmark that has seen the number of letters being delivered drop over many years.
It would be interesting if a similar pattern were ever to be seen happen in the UK. Would this possibly result in greater opportunities being created for self employed courier drivers to either increase the amount of work they are able to take on board or become employed by another company who have been able to increase their workload?
