A larger percentage of courier drivers probably use a van to deliver parcels and certain other items rather than say a car. Some courier drivers will have purchased a used van and others a new van with cost often being a major reason in their decision making process.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of new vans registered here in the UK in the up to 3.5 tonnes category in September 2024 amounted to 48,455 compared to 47,418 in September 2025 – a drop of 2.1%.
Looking at the above figures in a little more detail, the number of pickups rose from 5,331 to 5,749 – an increase of 7.85. The number of 4 X 4s fell from 747 to 747 – a drop of 13.4%. The number of vans in the up to 2.0 tonnes category rose from 1,180 to 1,202 – an increase of 1.9%. The number of vans in the 2.0 to 2.5 tonnes category dropped considerably from 9,552 to 7,150 – a fall of 25.1%. The number of vans in the 2.5 to 3.5 tonnes category rose from 31,645 to 32,670 – an increase of 3.2%.
On a year to date basis to September 2024, the number of new vans sold in the UK in the up to 3.5 tonnes category amounted 267,339 compared to 241,264 for the same period to September 2025 – a drop of 9.8% that we are sure you will agree is a sizeable fall.
This is no doubt disappointing news for the motor trade industry. However, who knows, it may benefit the likes of courier drivers if those selling new vans in the UK feel they need to consider reducing prices to increase sales r perhaps including one or more additional extras to the light commercial vehicles (LCVs).
